OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) is Microsoft’s attempt at a cloud storage service for your Android device. The app boasts a handful of features that are packaged into a nicely designed app making sure that you are productive wherever and whenever.
When choosing a cloud storage service a big selling point is the amount of free storage you receive for signing up and also the price for extra storage. OneDrive offers a complimentary 15 GB with an extra 8 GB available from referrals and activating your camera roll backup. If you need more storage you can upgrade your plan. Simple. With a starting fee of $1.99/month you are granted 100 GB of extra storage and 200 GB for $3.99/month. This makes sure you have enough storage to keep all of your files safe and secure in the cloud.
Microsoft have another option: with a subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365 service (starting at $6.99/month) you are granted a whopping 1 TB of storage in OneDrive.
OneDrive offers a pleasant experience when browsing your files on your Android device. The app is designed to make sure everything is easy to access with the help of a search bar and multiple viewing options. You are able to easily sort your files in a way that is convenient to you, upload files and create new folders all from the home screen. There is also a sidebar on the left that allows to view your recent documents, camera backup photos and also files that you have shared with people. Overall, the design of the app is great for users who want to be productive and isn’t that what it is all about?
OneDrive boasts a number a features, however many of the other cloud storage apps have these features too. The app can backup your photos from your device (using this feature gives you an extra 3 GB of storage). This is a highly recommended feature that is a must have for any user who wants all their photos safe, secure and accessible anywhere. If you don’t want anyone looking at your files or photos you can set a 4 digit code that would be required every time you open the app. It gives you the comfort of lending your phone to someone knowing they won’t uncover anything stored in your OneDrive.
Sharing files is very easy through OneDrive. You select a file or folder and click the sharing icon. From here you are given two options: invite people and share a link. Inviting people gives specific individuals or groups permission to an item. You can then change the permission of each individual at any time. Sharing a link is useful when you post on Facebook or Twitter. However, don’t get as much control over individual permissions when you share it as a link.
OneDrive is not perfect though. If you want to view videos or listen to music you are required to download the whole thing. You can’t simply stream it. When searching searching for something, it doesn’t search within the files only the names of the files. The lack of a widget is disappointing. All that blue. Seriously Microsoft, there are other colours…
OneDrive does very well all the things that you would expect a cloud storage service to do. The generous amount of storage and affordability of extra storage make it a very useful app. However, it does lack killer features that would differentiate it from other cloud storage apps. Overall, the app makes it easy for you to access all your stored files and that is the most important thing when using the app on your Android device.
Ease of use of the app makes it a pleasure to use. The automatic photo backup feature is a must for any Android user. With OneDrive you can access your files on any device at any time.
The lack of a widget is very disappointing. You can't stream audio or video files, you have to download them onto your device. Search feature not as good as other cloud storage apps.
