Pushbullet manages to merge your android smartphone with your personal computer to your make life much easier. With its impressive array of features to increase your productivity you will be wondering why you didn’t install it earlier!
One of Pushbullet’s main features is the ability to send links, files, photos and notes to other devices that have Pushbullet installed (it’s available on all major operating systems). This means that you can sync files and photos between devices or just to share a link with someone. It can also work as a messaging application too, but I used it mainly to share notes back to my home PC that acted like reminders. The ability to do all this makes it worthwhile to use even if you are the only one of your friends using it (we hope that it won’t be for long!).
Another standout feature is the ability to forward notifications from your Android device to your PC. If a notification is displayed on your phone it will be forwarded to your PC, so that you don’t miss anything important again. This is incredibly useful when you are spending long periods sitting behind a PC, as you don’t need to constantly check your phone in case you have a new notification. Pushbullet has also introduced the ability to reply to an SMS though the notifications so you don’t have to use your phone at all. This is extremely useful in any scenario as it means you can keep your phone in your pocket and you can concentrate more on the task at hand.
If you dig a little deeper into Pushbullet you will find the settings menu that enables you to fine tune your experience. The notification forwarding function can be turned on and off incase this feature is not for you. These notifications can be adjusted so that they are only sent out when the phone is on WiFi, reducing the amount of data used. You can also adjust which apps you want the notifications to be forwarded from, so that you only get the really important notifications forwarded to you. A privacy setting can also be found in here to adjust whether the app is able to use your contact list to autocomplete contact information, incase you don’t want that information shared.
In a section titled ‘Highway to the Danger Zone’ are some of the experimental features such as automatically copying links & notes from self to the clipboard as well as the ability to sync notifications across all your Android devices. Another setting available to you is the universal copy & paste feature. It allows you to copy some text or a link on your Android device and then paste it on your PC. Extremely useful if you need to quickly change between the two.
Pushbullet is packed full of features and another useful one is the ‘Channels’ feature. You are able to subscribe to some tech sites such as the Daring Fireball or simply subscribe to the new Cyanide & Happiness comics. Some of the main sites are listed in the menu on your device, but more are available if you go directly to the Pushbullet site. This features makes sure you get the content straight away and can view it on any device you wish, so you never miss a headline again.
Portal is actually a separate app, however it is also made by the Pushbullet developers. Portal allows you to send files from your PC to your smartphone. This is done by simply scanning a barcode on your device from the Portal site.Once this has been done it is just a drag & drop scenario where files are transferred quickly and effortlessly. Files as big as 1GB can be transferred and all the files are sorted and saved on your phone. This feature will hopefully get merged into the main Pushbullet app, however if it doesn’t it needs some extra features to call for a separate review. (Important: needs Android 5.0+)
Overall, Pushbullet is a very simple and easy-to-use app packed full of features and potential. It can increase your productivity dramatically and also change how you use your phone and PC together. Once you experience all of these features you will be wondering why you didn’t need it earlier.
Send notes, links, files and photos easily to your contacts or just to your registered devices. Reply to messages from within the notification. Channels makes sure you get important information the minute it breaks. Portal is a simple way to transfer files from your PC to your Android device.
Replying to messages does not always work. Can only send one file at a time.
