Reddit is Fun
A Reddit client stuck between Gingerbread and HOLO UI
Free with ads, offers IAP or PRO version ($1.99 both) to remove them.
My first Android Reddit client was Reddit is Fun. I can’t remember why, but I can remember that I used it for quite a while. It can certainly serve you as your main Reddit client, as it served me for couple of months, but there are some drawbacks I’d like to mention here.
The front page
The first thing you look at when opening Reddit app is the front page. And if you judge a book by its cover, Reddit is Fun will look boring.
As far as I can tell, it looked the same two years ago. Not good.
To me it looks like a website from 90s. Let us skip the design for now.
The layout is pretty standard, you get the points on the left where you can immediately up/down-vote comments, tittle in the middle and a preview on the right. As usually tapping on the preview image will immediately open the image, while tapping the tittle will guide you to the thread itself.
Similarly to other Reddit clients, once you start scrolling the action bar disappears. I kinda feel it would be good if you could slide left-right to switch tabs (from top to new), but that may ruin the experience.
The hamburger menu (left sidebar) contains subreddits and you can search for a subreddit of your choice there.
Choose a subreddit of your choice, or type the name at the top. At least in this app searching for a subreddit is more subtle than on Reddit Sync for example. A friend of mine didn’t know how to do it on Sync.
To check the Subreddit’s sidebar, tap on the I located in action bar. No swiping from the right here.
Apparently you can directly message the mods from the Sidebar. Not sure why would I do that, but hey someone might use it so I’ll call it good.
The worst part of this app is opening comments on linked posts. Firstly you have to click on the title, and then click on comments. I won’t mention the design either.
Why is there text instead of icons? Text takes more space, looks ugly and unfinished.
Opening self posts works fine, because if you want to go directly to the content, tap on the preview image (right side). Since the actual content is the post itself, it will direct you there.
Next comes the thread view. It doesn’t get any much more appealing here either, as it looks boring too. Also lack of colored comments is a minus, I like it on all other Reddit apps.
If you want to upvote or downvote a comment, tap on the comment itself. Besides giving and taking karma, from there you can share a comment, reply to it and view profile of the person that commented.
That’d all be good if not for the design, it feels like some alpha preview with labelled buttons. I guess other Reddit clients have ruined me.
This app is definitely usable, but the design needs a serious overhaul if the developer wants app to compete with others.
The settings contain pretty much what you’d expect them to contain, no more no less.
Firstly, disable quit confirmation. It tends to be really annoying for Reddit apps.
Most of the things you’ll want to change are located under appearance, like dual pane on portrait and landscape (if you’re into that). There is a left handed mode if you are a lefty. Pretty nice actually.
I’ve noticed that all the Reddit clients have a fine design for Tablets, as Reddit is supposed to be browsed from tablets too I guess. Well, Reddit is Fun is no exception here.
The portrait mode with dual pane disabled is pretty similar to the phone UI, except for the additional tabs.
Once you enable the Dual-pane mode, which doesn’t make that much sense on phones, you get two panes. Left one for sidebar/threads and the right one for threads/thread-view (comments).
The landscape mode works a bit better, since you have more space for the content than the sidebar, which is still too big.
If you are using only Reddit is Fun and haven’t tried other Reddit apps, please do so. If you are using it because you’re a fan of the name or whatever, at least try to persuade the developer to make a major update to this app.
The review is based on our own experience and devices. Your experience might be different depending upon device you are using and your expectations.
Keep in mind that when calculating the average, ratings don't have the same weight. Performance and design is valued more than regular updates for example.
Please let us know in the comments if you didn't like something about the review. On the other hand if you did, feel free to share it with your friends.
