We all have busy lives and an endless list of things to do. Tasks get forgotten about and skipped, but this doesn’t have to be the case when you have Wunderlist!
Wunderlist aims to make your life a lot easier by setting up lists in which tasks can be ticked off one by one. What makes this app brilliant is the raw simplicity of it: you simply make a list, make a task and then tick it off. Nothing can be easier to do and that is why Wunderlist is so useful.
Upon opening the app, you are presented with a page that displays all the lists of tasks that have been created. The lists can be reorganised by holding down the 3 horizontal lines by the side and dragging it into the right position. This is especially useful when some lists are much more important than the other, so they can be dragged up to the top. By the other side of the lists, is a number that represents the unfinished tasks in that list (I have definitely been slacking in Fluid Mechanics). A simple front page, but also one that does not disorientate the user making it a much more pleasant experience.
Apart from the lists that you have created yourself, the app also collects information and puts it into Smart Lists. The Smart Lists include all the tasks that are either due today, starred or assigned to you by another user. It’s an easy way to be reminded about upcoming events and keep on top of things. The information displayed in the Smart Lists can be toggled in the Settings menu, but you wouldn’t want to miss any important tasks would you? An Inbox list remains at the top and this is a dedicated list for tasks from your emails. Unfortunately, these are not uploaded automatically, so they require you to forward useful emails to a dedicated address after which it will be added to your lists.
Creating a task is just as easy as everything else in this app. Simple click on a list where you would like the task to go, type the task into the box at the top, star the task if you wish and then simply click ‘done’. Voila! “Hold on a minute. I want to be reminded about the task!” Don’t you worry, it has that sorted for you too. Click on your created task and a sidebar pops out with various options such as assigning a due date, setting a reminder and writing a description (if you can’t remember that too!). Gone are the days when remembering tasks was a chore itself. Wunderlist list also lets you add sub tasks to your tasks if your task is more complicated than usual.
Tasks don’t have to be done individually, so Wunderlist adds the ability to collaborate with other people to get stuff done. Join forces with your friends, family and colleagues and make sure nothing is left undone. Wunderlist also has the ability to communicate within the app, so any disputes about who does what can be settled directly within the app. Communicating comes in the form of commenting on shared lists, which you get notified for so you can reply back in the form of another comment. As mentioned before, any tasks that are shared with you are displayed in a Smart List and an ‘Activity’ section lets you keep track of information in shared lists. All these features make Wunderlist a very useful collaboration tool for work or just everyday life.
Let’s talk about widgets. Wunderlist provides 3 different widgets that fulfil all the needs of the user. The first widget allows you to scrolls through the lists and see all the tasks in each lists. From the widget you can tick of any tasks, however there is no ‘add’ feature in this widget. The other two widgets are essentially the same as the only difference is their size. Clicking on either opens up a floating menu that allows you to type in the task and even create a reminder and due date. The combination of these three (really two) widgets, means you can quickly add and tick off tasks.
Wunderlist is mostly a free service, however a Wunderlist Pro does exists. Wunderlist Pro costs $4.99 a month for some features that many users will not require. These include having an unlimited maximum file size, unlimited subtasks and 10 extra backgrounds. Yes, 10 extra backgrounds. A bargain right? Jokes aside, some users will benefit from some of these pro features, however I found that the free version was adequate for my needs.
Wunderlist is a brilliant app that has improved my productivity dramatically and a must have for those struggling with getting stuff done. The simple beauty of this app makes it a pleasure to use and how it all syncs with other platforms means whatever you are using, you can access your lists. With Wunderlist, remembering to do chores will never be the same again!
Simplistic and elegant designed app that makes ticking off tasks easy.
The Pro feature does not give enough benefits for most people to pay for it.
